So you’ve decided that you want to get a video of your wedding day. You have come to the conclusion as a couple that the future benefits of getting a wedding video outweigh the cost.
As you start your research in looking at wedding reels that you like and hitting submit on the inquiry forms. You soon see that the average cost of a wedding video is around four thousand dollars. You knew it was expensive but how can you justify four thousand dollars for a days work, and the photographer was a fraction of that.
The simple answer is, that is a bargain for what you get.
A wedding video often has a number of camera people needed to capture the event often 2 or 3. and sometimes even a drone.
The equipment including cameras, sound recording, hard drives and high end computers and software needed to edit the footage is a huge expense.
Then the associated costs of running a business, you quickly understand that the profit margins on producing wedding films is very low.
But most importantly to be able to produce quality wedding video’s you need to wear many hat’s.
Firstly:
You need to be able to shoot great images, as they happen in real time. This is a skill that can not be taught. Whereas in filmmaking, you have the ability to do another take if the first one doesn’t work.
If you don’t get it the first time, you’ve missed it.
It’s not like, you can stop mid ceremony, and ask the couple “can you just have your first kiss, just one more time”.
Secondly:
George Lucas once said that sound makes for at least fifty percent of any film. Capturing quality sound live is a set of skills unto itself.
It is nowhere near enough to capture sound through the camera, in fact in wedding video it is rare that the sound captured through the camera is used at all.
You need a whole set of microphones and recording devices to be able to get quality audio of a wedding and most importantly they must remain hidden from view of the camera.
and Lastly.
You need to be able to tell a story of the day.
There are some wedding video suppliers who mix their favourite images of the day to music. This is nice, but a quality wedding video is a mix of nuanced images with sound and music to tell a story of the couple. That’s the hidden art behind producing a quality wedding video.
It takes a talented editor time editing and refining the video to it’s final product.
A movie studio will hire many different people to fulfil these roles at a massive cost.
Whereas when you hire a small team to do your wedding video you get all that value for a fraction.
But the real value to you, is that a quality wedding video is a timeless document of your wedding day.
Not only a memory for you both to enjoy but a legacy to be viewed and enjoyed for
generations to come, and when it comes to that, what is that really worth to you?
